Following a Hungarian protagonist from adolescence through midlife, this novel captures the fragmented passage of time across geography and memory as he negotiates desire, belonging, and the human body.
2. The Land in Winter by Andrew Miller
Set during the harsh winter of 1962–63 in rural England, this novel explores relationships under strain between couples, communities, and one’s inner self, against a frozen, atmospheric backdrop.
3. The Rest of Our Lives by Ben Markovits
A middle-aged law professor sets off on an unplanned road trip after dropping off his daughter at college, prompting questions about legacy, regret, and what it means to live on one’s own terms.
4. Audition by Katie Kitamura
A taut, psychologically charged narrative about a middle-aged actor whose world shifts when a stranger claims to be her son—blurring the lines of memory, identity, and truth.
5. The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny by Kiran Desai
Kiran Desai returns after nearly two decades with The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny, a 667‑page epic exploring Indian-American experiences, making her a potential second Booker double‐winner. A sweeping love story and family saga that follows two Indian protagonists whose lives intertwine across India and the U.S. as they navigate identity, ambition, and the dislocations of modern life.
